Enma Daio (閻魔大王, Enma Dai-Ō) is the Great King of Hell who judges the dead. He is also Hōzuki's godfather.
Contrary to the popular ogre-ish appearance of the mythological Enma that is supposed to induce fear, the Enma in the Hoozuki no Reitesu world has a very mild and gentle appearance.
He is for the most part of the series seen in the same set of clothes consisting of a red yukata. He is also seen wearing a traditional hat that bears the kanji symbol for king. He has rather thick facial hair; see the bushy eyebrows and beard.
Moreover, he is often seen sporting a smile which further adds to his gentle like appearance.
Enma is regarded as a very calm and kind man, he always wishes to be pleasant and subsequently he is disrespected for his mighty title as King of Hell. However, although he has been made aware of this several times, King Enma is never especially angered or sadden by this; he accepts with ease what others seem to think of him.
Enma can be considered to be very paternal towards all the characters introduced in the show; always sporting a smile whenever happiness reaches them or simply laughing at their follies with gentle demeanor.
Overall, King Enma is perceived to act friendly towards all, even to those who wish him harm. However, to a certain degree, King Enma knows when to act a little harsher. Although it can be said that he seems to have limits for how harsh he can act, relying on his assistant Hoozuki to be the harshness and strictness that is expected of his title as King.
